At last..

First boss finally done. Spent way too much time on him, but I am hopeful that I can pickup the pace on the following bosses.
Ofcourse I had to do a lot of extra work along the way, such as new weapons and effects.
Grunt work here and there, and ontop of that I was sick with flu for a while, plus a painful shoulder injury. Great times!
Feedback welcome.

    Impressive boss, well done! :)

That looks pretty solid. Surely he will take a lot more hits in the final game though? I guess depending on difficulty mode. Any other thoughts on varying the challenge with him? Faster/more bullets?

I think I actually had a dream where you reported to have finished the second level and boss in just a few days. I was pleasantly surprised :)

aha that was definetly a dream DrPetter.
Difficulty; yup he’s a bit on the easy side but the weapons havent really been balanced yet.
For modes, I’ve thought that I could give him different weapon arrangements. For example, its just changing a line of code to swap a vulcan for a pulse cannon. So thats an idea to toggle with.

Very good work, the Boss is not original at all but noone care since he’s very well done!! Keep up!

suggestions? well, if it looks like a scorpion, with the stinger of it, it should have an attack like a scorpion and try to sting the playership occasionally, imho! it looks way too easy to dodge bullets for on like me, who has not even beaten the 1st boss of prototype.

His big beam weapon looks cool when it’s charging up, but the beam itself is sort of a let down. Needs more… awesome. Maybe some softer edges and poofy particles or something. Other than that, though, it’s looking really great.

    that looks killer

It looks awesome, even if a bit on the easy side and with few weapons.
Also I would make that laser cannon a bit quicker (that bluish one that fires a continuous stream) when he starts firing, and maybe a little halo coming out of the gun when it starts firing) to give it more of an impression of a strong gun.

Wow, it’s looking mighty impressive! May I ask how you’re exporting animations?

  10. X-0ut says:

Mauro: Each keyframe is exported as an individual OBJ file. From there I parse and compile into my own format containing the full animation & materials.

A long time ago I had found a copy of prototype at some free download site but never figured out who made it. Then recently I discovered your sequel which I am learning to play. I really loved the r-type series, brings back some happy memories. And then I find your blog and am totally blown away, I have toyed with the idea of writing my shmup but look like I won’t have to :D I think the name and animations on this boss fit very well, love the glow, bloom and partial destructibility with different modes. Even if the boss turns out a little easy it’s good to have variety he could be the first boss or a mini boss. As far as the beam cannon, I think the startup is awesome, maybe at the ends of the beam instead of cutting off it could fade out and have the little twinkly particles fade out slower. A minor detail really just that one little bit of polish and I would drop a few quarters at an arcade to face this guy. Looking forward to more posts :)
